BRISTOL CENTRAL BRANCH MEETING PROGRAMME -
Bristol Central branch meets every Tuesday evening in the upstairs room at the CORNUBIA PUB in Temple Street, which is just off of Victoria Street near the Fire station. It can be reached by taking any bus to the city centre and is less than 10 minutes from any of those bus stops. On the first Tuesday of every month, the branch meets jointly for a city-wide aggregate with the Bristol South branch at the same venue. All meetings start at 7:30pm and we would ask that people try and arrive promptly.
17th August - HUNGARY 1956 - When the workers fought for Freedom
54 years ago, ‘Soviet’ tanks rolled into Budapest and crushed an uprising based on factory councils and a radical movement of the youth. Jack Jeffrey describes how in a matter of weeks the Hungarian Revolution went form appealing to the ‘United Nations’ to the ‘Workers of the World’ for support, and asks why the leaders of the ‘Free’ capitalist west did nothing to aid their struggle.
24th August - Selling and Writing for a Workers’ Paper
The Socialist, the Socialist Party’s weekly paper stands in a long line of revolutionary papers, such as Lenis Iskra, the Neue Reihische Zeitung published by Marx during the 1848 revolution and the news sheets of the French Revolution and the Paris Commune. Matt Gordon examines how socialists can put their ideas across in the era of the sound bite and the internet. He will ask if a socialist paper is still relevant in the work of political ’spin’.
